Prominent Gambling Entrepreneur, Whose Contributions Elevated Macau Above Las Vegas, Passes Away at 95
Galaxy Entertainment's Chairman Lui Che Woo Passes Away, Succession Planned
Lui Che Woo, the late chairman of Galaxy Entertainment, a prominent figure in the real estate and casino industry, passed away on November 7 at the age of 95. Known for his understated demeanor, often wearing a flat cap during his business activities, Lui made his initial fortune in quarry mining and construction through the Hong Kong-listed K. Wah Group.
Lui's leadership was instrumental in Galaxy Entertainment's success, according to the company. His vision, tremendous leadership, and guidance were crucial in transforming the company into one of the world's leading gambling hubs. In 2006, Galaxy Entertainment surpassed other gambling hubs, including Las Vegas, to become the world's biggest gambling hub.
In Macau, Lui was a key driver in the city's success as a gambling hub. Since Macau became the world's biggest gambling hub in 2006, it hasn't looked back. Today, Galaxy Entertainment owns more real estate on the Cotai Strip than any other concessionaire, and it is one of six Macau gambling license holders.
Lui's son, Francis Lui, is the deputy chairman of Galaxy Entertainment and leads many projects within the company. However, Lui Che Woo will be replaced as chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group by his son, Lui Lok Sang, who was appointed chairman effective December 13, 2024. This transition follows a formal appointment announced by the company.
Galaxy Entertainment has announced that it will appoint a new chairman in due course. The appointment of a new chairman will not affect Galaxy Entertainment's operations, as stated by the company. Lui's other children work globally in various aspects of the family's business interests.
Lui Che Woo was one of the wealthiest men in Hong Kong. His legacy will continue to be felt in the real estate and casino industry, as well as in Macau, where his contributions helped shape the city into the thriving gambling hub it is today.
